Each semester, we offer numerous specialized language courses in various languages. By taking these courses, you can easily earn the so-called “Foreign Language Certificate.” To qualify, you must meet the 80% attendance requirement and successfully pass the respective exam.

In addition to taking a traditional specialized language course, you can also earn your foreign language certificate by spending time abroad. Both studying law in a foreign-language-speaking country (a semester abroad) and completing an internship abroad lasting at least six weeks (§ 7 (3), sentence 2, JAG NRW) allow you to earn the foreign language qualification.

Another way to demonstrate foreign language proficiency is to participate in one of our English-language moot courts. Moot courts are simulated court proceedings in which students act as attorneys in a fictional case and must persuade the court through briefs and oral arguments.

The Law Faculty generally offers three English-language moot courts:

• Philip C. Jessup Moot Court,
• Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court
• Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court.

Are you interested in expanding your knowledge of legal English beyond the Foreign Language Certificate, learning about a different legal system, and thus broadening your horizons during your studies?
